Interview date: 20th November 2017 Works at: Lewes Leisure Centre
How did you hear about your apprenticeship?
“I heard about it originally when I was looking for apprenticeships online, on the GOV.UK website. I’d already worked with Swim UK before that when I was doing StepIn2sport back in the summer so I knew they were trustworthy.”
How long have you been in post and are you enjoying it?
“I’ve been in post for about a month and a half, it’s been a great learning experience and getting stuck into the work has really helped me to mature. So yeah, they’ve been really helpful.”
What courses have you completed so far?
“Back in the summer, I did my NPLQ course which really helped me get my apprenticeship in the first place. I also did Level 2 Fitness Instruction. Both of them were fantastic.”
What’s the best thing about your apprenticeship so far?
“Probably the people I get to work with. They’re great, very friendly and help me out where they can. Even when things are busy and hectic, they always find a way to fix things.”
Is this your first proper job and how have you found the transition from school into work?
“This is my first full-time position and the transition for me has been pretty smooth to be honest. The first week is all about getting used to the long shifts and going in day after day but eventually it just becomes routine. Every day is a little bit different which is great.”
What do you hope to do after your apprenticeship?
“I’m looking towards a full-time position with the company I am with, but I’m also looking to further my training at the same time. It’s really the case of getting stuck into my apprenticeship whilst keeping my options open and seeing what opportunities there are for me.”
How have you found the tutors so far?
“They’ve been great, they’ve been very helpful with me, because I have learning difficulties myself, they’re really considerate of me and know what they can do to help me. They have given me extra time to do my portfolio work which is really helpful.”
Do you have any hobbies outside of work?
“Yes, I play cricket for Loughton Cricket Club, and have been for about 7 – 8 years.”
Was Swim UK helpful during your induction process?
“Yes, very much so, they made it very clear what they were offering and what they could do to help me. They also made it very clear with where I was going and what I was doing. I am fairly certain that they will help me to know where to go next.”
“Taking those courses are really good for individual progression and that if anyone has the chance to, then grab it with both hands. Especially with the StepIn2Sport, it’s free and you might not get another opportunity to do it.”
